About Us

So, what exactly is Powder Coating?

Powder Coating is an environmentally safe finish. There are no fumes, carcinogens or hazardous by-products associated with powder coating. The process provides a durable, long lasting decorative finish to products made of steel, aluminum, brass, and can be applied over galvanize. Today, powder coating offers a great color selection. There are literally hundreds of colors to choose from. You can visit the following websites for examples; www.cardinalpaint.com and www.tigercoatings.com.

The Application Process

First the parts are thoroughly cleaned. This is done by either media blasting, phosphate wash or both. Then the parts are placed on a cart where they are run through an oven to be dried off. Once the parts are dry, they are ready to be coated. This is done electro- statically. When the desired mil thickness is applied, the parts are put into an oven to be cured at a temperature of 400 degrees. The time of cure depends on the thickness and density of the parts. During the curing process the powder melts into the substrate of the part and crosslink’s onto itself. This creates the bond.  Once the cure time is complete the parts are removed from the oven where they must be cooled off. Once cooled off the parts are 100% inspected and packaged for shipment.

Today, powder coating offers a great color selection. There are literally hundreds of colors to choose from. There are also different chemistries within powders to suit the end use. Powder produces a smooth finish, no runs, sags or heavy build-up.

A series of pretreatment steps are applied to the parts. An alkaline cleaner/iron phosphate solution followed by a clean water rinse. This applies a anti rust conversion coat to steel parts as well as helps the powder to adhere better.

The powder is applied by spraying charged particles of powder onto grounded parts. The parts are then cured in a controlled temperature oven. Once the parts come out of the oven they are fully cured.
